This artwork was created by Geckler after she was awarded the City of Los Angeles (C.O.L.A.) Mid-Career Master Artist 2016 Fellowship. Geckler proposed beginning a new body of photo-based work comprised of cuttings of flagging tape that she has collected over the past 15 years in a clear plexi box. Geckler utilized her flatbed scanner to capture these chaotic arrangements, essentially tripling the resolution of digital cameras currently available on the market. These large-scale, macroscopic, highly detailed images of her signature material, flagging tape, are by-products of very controlled movements that Geckler makes while holding the plexi box. Different movements generate unique arrangements and until the image is fully captured and displayed on the computer screen, she is not sure if it will be successful or not. Geckler studied film photography while an undergraduate at the Tyler School of Art (1994-1998) and these are the first fine art photographs that she has exhibited.
